When are two parts better than one?

One-size-fits-all typically simplifies situations. However, this approach does not deliver the best results when selecting an ultra-wide DC-DC power supply. The trade offs can be stark when comparing one part versus several parts to span ultra-wide input ranges.

The common drawbacks of using one part to span an ultra-wide input voltage range include:

  • Lower efficiency
  • Lower power density
  • Higher cost

By contrast, deploying two or more converters can deliver higher power densities and reduce size.
